Rental on St. Thomas

To truly enjoy the freedom of the islands, we recommend that you rent a car for your villa vacation. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, a U.S. or foreign driver's license is valid. Rentals are available on both St. Thomas and St. John. We prefer renting at the St. Thomas airport as it is cheaper and cars are usually better. If you do so, drive to Red Hook and taking the car barge (ferry runs every half hour from 6am to 6pm) over to St. John, but you can also just rent a car once you get to St John. The St. Thomas rental companies will tell you that you’re not covered on St John but it’s not true- you are covered.

Rental on St. John

If you decide to rent on St. John, Bougainvillea Leasing is recommended. They’re within two blocks of the ferry dock plus, when you visit Cruz Bay during your stay, they allow you to park with them. A private taxi can be arranged to meet you at the airport and take you to the St. John ferry at Red Hook for the 20 minute ferry ride if you so choose.

Be aware, island cars are generally small with vans only holding up to 7 passengers so please choose your rental wisely. It takes a little while for Stateside visitors to get used to driving on the left side of the road, but it’s important to remember. Also, be careful of when it starts to rain. The roads are steep and very slick when rains starts to fall. Try to only rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle and check that the tires have decent tread on them.
