What time zone are the U.S. Virgin Islands in?

Atlantic Standard Time (AST). Daylight Savings is not recognized in the U.S. Virgin Islands so during the first Sunday in April to Last the Sunday in October, the time is no different than Eastern Standard Time (EST). When daylight saving time ends in October, the USVI's become one hour ahead of EST.

What is the legal drinking age in the U.S. Virgin Islands?

18 Years Old.

Where is the nearest care center to the Villa?

The Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center. The center provides 24-hour emergency services and outpatient clinics Monday through Friday. When necessary, patient transfers to the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, a fifteen minute ferry boat ride away on nearby St. Thomas, are facilitated using the Star of Life Ambulance boat. Are there any nude or topless beaches?

Public nudity is illegal in the Virgin Islands and consequently there are no designated clothing optional beaches. Clothing is optional at Villa Mistral as it is a private residence.

What taboos or general customs should I be aware of before my visit?

Virgin Islanders are quite conservative, so it is seen as an insult when visitors walk around in swimwear or without shirts if not on the beach or poolside. Visitors clad in only a bikini top and shorts, or bareback with shorts are likely to receive a surly response from customer service in stores.
A long standing tradition in the Virgin Islands is greeting someone before a transaction of any kind starts. Before asking "How much is this?" or "How do I get to such and such place?" say, "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon". "Hello", "Hi" or even "Excuse me" don't have the same effect. An additional "How are you today?" is a nice touch as well.

Is there anything else I should know while driving on St. John?

The same vehicle and road rules apply as they are in the States; St. John police are especially known to be sticklers of seatbelt offenders. Also, cell phone use is prohibited while driving unless an earpiece is used. As always when driving, be on the safe side.

What Cell Phones work in St. John?

All cell phones work on the island but Sprint and AT&T cell phones work best on St. John. Both have a plan with no roaming including the U.S. Virgin Islands. Verizon however is on roaming at $2.00 per minute for both incoming and outgoing.

Do I need a passport to go to British Virgin Islands?

Yes.

What is the duty-free allowance?

It’s a $1,600 exemption. This includes 5 liters of alcohol and 1,000 cigarettes per person.

Is there a Sales Tax?
